Even Pace Cars Need a Break Sometimes

Martinsville Race Delayed by Pace Car Breakdown

Today’s NASCAR race at Martinsville was delayed when the Chevrolet Camaro pace car broke down on the track.

An unexpected turn in today’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Martinsville saw the Chevrolet Camaro pace car breaking down right from the front of the field, briefly delaying the race. With some confusion on the track, a safety truck, flashing lights, and all, she claimed the leading spot for the remainder of the caution period.

Road & Track contributor Bozi Tatarevic discovered the pace car in the pit lane during the race, noticing heavy rubber build-up from the track in the Camaro’s fenders. Tatarevic speculates this may have resulted in the car losing a speed sensor harness and triggering a limp home mode.

Meanwhile, the Chevrolet representative stated that the track’s “rubber debris damaged the wiring harness to the fuel pump, disabling the pace car.” NASCAR switched to the backup pace car to maintain race norms.
