This hiccup cost him a spot in the eagerly awaited Championship 4, ending his chances of winning his first Cup title this year. Hamlin’s prospects seemed promising at the Championship 4 elimination race at Martinsville Speedway, but the fierce competition left no room for error.

Despite a strong start, Hamlin fell short as William Byron and Ryan Blaney outperformed him. Hamlin’s valiant effort fell short by eight points, denying his fifth Championship 4 run.
