Dalton Leonard’s Pit Road Courage Part of Buescher’s Playoff Run

Chris Buescher and the No. 17 RFK Racing team have defied expectations with their impressive performance in the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs. While Buescher has been receiving much deserving praise, it’s essential to recognize the unsung heroes behind the scenes who play a vital role in his success. One such hero is rear tire changer Dalton Leonard.

At the Playoff opener at Darlington Raceway, Leonard found himself in a situation that could have easily rattled even the most seasoned crew members. As the gas man unplugged during a routine pit stop, fuel spilled onto the ground, causing a spark when Leonard engaged his pit gun to tighten the left rear lug nut. The sparks ignited a fire that quickly engulfed the rear of the No. 17 Ford Mustang.

Despite the intense heat and danger, Leonard didn’t hesitate. He knew that continuing the pit stop was crucial for maintaining Buescher’s track position and chances at victory. In an exclusive interview with Racing America, Leonard shared his mindset during those intense moments.

“I knew I couldn’t quit. You just can’t quit,” Leonard said. “The consequences of backing out right there and losing all our track position would have been far worse than dealing with the fire for three seconds.”

In a video shared by RFK Racing, Leonard’s composure is on full display. He remains focused, precisely completing the pit stop as flames flicker around him. Buescher would secure a third-place finish, thanks in no small part to Leonard’s bravery.

Leonard’s decision to stay and finish the pit stop surrounded by fire speaks volumes about his commitment to his team’s success. He credits his safety equipment, including his fire suit from OMP, for protecting him from burns. Every safety gear he wore worked as intended, reminding fans that NASCAR takes safety seriously.

Reflecting on the incident, Leonard commented, “You never know when it’s gonna happen, and I would have hated for my forearms to be exposed right there.” His preparation and dedication paid off as he emerged unscathed from the fire.

While Leonard’s pit road heroism at Darlington was extraordinary, he emphasizes that the RFK Racing team has been firing on all cylinders throughout the season. Every department, from the engineers to the pit stop crew, has contributed to the team’s success.

Brad Keselowski’s leadership has kept the team focused and motivated. Leonard believes the team’s current momentum and energy can lead to even more victories, including the No. 6 car’s first trip to the winner’s circle.

As the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs head into the Round of 8, Buescher finds himself just three points below the cutline. While he may have been considered a long shot at the beginning of the season, Buescher and the RFK Racing team prove they belong in the championship conversation.

Regardless of the outcome, the indomitable spirit and resilience displayed by Dalton Leonard and the entire No. 17 team have earned them the admiration of fans and competitors alike. Their collective efforts are a shining example of what it takes to succeed in the racing world.
