Sonoma Raceway Discovers Repaving: It’s Not Just for Public Highways

Sonoma Raceway: New Coat of Asphalt, Same Charming Worn-In Feel

Today, Sonoma Raceway announced a thorough repaving project in an assertive move towards providing an ever-enhanced racing experience. Bid farewell to the worn surface; the landmark road course known globally gears up for a brand-new landscape ahead of the 2024 NASCAR race weekend scheduled for June 7-9.

Brian Flynn, executive vice president and general manager of Sonoma Raceway, described the raceway’s regular usage, beyond the signature Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR weekend. The raceway caters to automotive patrons, corporate clientele, car clubs, and manufacturers. Hence, he affirmed that it’s vital to continuously elevate this top-tier facility’s stature to serve Sonoma Raceway’s diverse visitors.

Awarded the project, local business Bay Cities Paving & Grading of Concord, CA, will soon be igniting the transformation. Flynn praised the involvement of this Bay area firm, noting it’s part of their ongoing effort to engage with their local community.

The repaving project, marking the first complete revamp in 23 years, takes wheels post-Winter Jam on December 16-17, 2023. Speedway Motorsports’ significant investment in this endeavor promises an upgraded track surface to amplify driver performance and create a frictionless racing experience.

Steve Swift, senior vice president of operations and development at Speedway Motorsports, reassured that despite the newness, the materials used will bestow upon the track a “seasoned feel.” That guarantees electrifying competition from the get-go in 2024.

Sonoma Raceway, a revered landmark, has been serving exhilarating experiences to the racing community since 1968. Home to top racing series and drivers, the West Coast treasure hosts world-class events like Velocity Invitational, GT World Challenge, Ferrari Challenge, and NASCAR and NHRA events.
